Auto Accident Injury

Have you or someone you know been injured in an auto accident?? Every year, thousands of Americans are involved in car accidents right here in the Stone Mountain area. At Stoneview Injury and Wellness Clinic, our chiropractor Dr. Charles Wilkerson, strongly believes that the type of holistic and drug-free services offered through chiropractic care can make a world of difference in your healing and recovery.

The Role of Chiropractic Care for An Auto Accident Injury

One can never underestimate the importance of chiropractic care for an auto accident injury. Unfortunately, Chiropractic care is not commonly available in emergency rooms. Medical doctors do not have the training to locate and adjust spinal nerve stress. Consequently, millions of accident victims will leave the emergency room with spinal nerve stress, which can lead to months, if not years, of pain and suffering. If you have recently been injured in an auto accident, chiropractic care is one of the safest and most effective means to relieve your pain and to help you recover.

Common and Hidden Types of Auto Accident Injury

Do you know the hidden injuries of an auto accident? The primary mechanism of injury in an auto accident is the rapid deceleration or change in direction experienced by your car and, by default, your body. In other cases, blunt force trauma and restraint (seat belt) impact can also lead to damage. Some of the most common types of auto accident injury we see at our clinic include:

  • Muscle strains or ligament sprains, especially in the shoulder or hip (in areas in contact with a seat belt)
  • Disc bulge or disc herniation, in which abnormal tension forces a disc to protrude out of place or rupture
  • Sciatica, which can cause severe buttocks and leg pain due to compression of the sciatic nerve in the low back
  • Whiplash, a syndrome of neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and decreased range of motion due to the whip-like movement of the neck during an accident
  • Vertebral bone fractures
  • Joint subluxations and dislocations
  • Generalized low back pain and stiffness

There are several types of injuries that people sustain in car accidents. The most common injury is whiplash, which is caused when the impact of the vehicle causes the head to move abruptly in one direction and then back in another direction. This can be either backwards and forwards, or from side to side. Whiplash usually causes strained or torn muscles and or ligaments. Vertebrae are moved out of alignment, and chronic headaches. A challenging possibility is that you can sustain an auto accident injury and not realize it for days or weeks. This is because hormones involved in the flight-or-fight response (part of a normal reaction to acute trauma) have an analgesic effect, meaning they can hide symptoms of injury until their levels slowly return to normal.
