Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) remain a significant contributor to spinal injuries, but recent advancements have made vehicles more crashworthy. Despite this, millions of non-fatal crashes still cause substantial injuries and economic burdens. Although, the low fatality statistics tells only half of the story. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that MVCs result in a staggering annual cost of over $340 billion, highlighting the need for focused treatment and prevention efforts.

Most concerning is the rising prevalence of whiplash injuries, which are often overlooked in MVC survivors. According to the Spine Research Institute of San Diego, whiplash injuries occur in nearly 3 million MVCs annually. Around 45% of these cases lead to chronic symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, and even cognitive issues. Unfortunately, many healthcare providers lack the specialized training required to effectively treat these complex injuries.

Dr. Wilkerson, certified by the Spine Research Institute of San Diego, brings over 20 years of experience in treating these types of injuries, including mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs). His expertise allows him to focus on the biomechanics of collisions, which helps ensure patients receive the most effective care. This certification, granted to only 100 physicians annually, highlights Dr. Wilkerson’s commitment to the latest diagnostic and treatment methods.

As September marks Spinal Cord Injury Prevention Month, it’s crucial to address the long-term effects of spinal trauma. Many individuals experience chronic pain, disability, and the emotional toll of these injuries long after the initial trauma. Dr. Wilkerson is dedicated to empowering patients with cutting-edge, evidence-based treatments to mitigate long-term damage.
